There are love stories so tumultuous that they inspire the plots of movies and soap operas. Then, there are those relationships which run the risk of never blossoming into a romance for fear of ruining a beautiful friendship: this is what happened to Kate MacNeil, a young woman who waited 24 years before declaring her feelings to her best friend.

From 1997, in fact, Kate only eyes for her friend Paul Damon: the two immediately forged a special bond when they met as teenagers in Williamsburg, Virginia, United States - but then something even more special was born.

The two talked for hours on the phone every day after school, even falling asleep while on the calls. "We were practically in a relationship, but we had never kissed," Kate said. "I tried to kiss him when we were 18, but he turned his head away. I ran away embarrassed and devastated. We slowly stopped seeing each other, but I never stopped thinking about him."

The two lost touch when Paul joined the Navy and Kate moved to college in Alabama. Over the years Kate, now a teacher, and Paul, a master carpenter, both got married to different people, but kept tabs on each other's via social media for years. In December 2020, after her marriage ended, the 38-year-old mother of two plucked up the courage and reached out to Paul on Facebook.

"I had gotten to a point in my life where I knew I had to reach out to him and see if he felt the same way as I did. I've always loved him," Kate said. "Two weeks later he texted me back and we talked for hours before he agreed to come to visit my home in Port Charlotte, Florida." Paul, also 38, explained that when Kate contacted him he was thrilled. "I can't think of a single moment when I didn't think of Kate in all the years we were apart. No one was a match for her," he commented. "When he landed in Florida, it was magical. The 24-year wait was worth it," said Kate. "I feel like my life is complete now."

"There's always been a special bond between us. It's incredible," explained Paul. After a week together, Paul travelled back to Williamsburg. But six weeks later, he moved to Florida. "We're still best friends. We're perfect for each other," he said. Now the two are officially engaged and will get married soon. "It's a dream come true," said Kate.

We wish this couple all the best and a happy life together!
