Countless studies have been done on animal languages and we are still trying to understand how much our four-legged friends are really able to understand our words. For sure, many of the commands we give are understood by, for example, dogs: "sit", "let's go", "bed" and so on. Dogs can be trained, and many are very well-behaved. The subject of this story, however, could not understand why her recently-adopted dog did not seem to respond to her commands. But a surprising discovery explained the mystery!

Ariana Giampietro, a 26-year-old woman, says she has a mission: to save as many Pitbulls as possible and to change the negative perceptions that many people have of these dogs. The Pitbull is unfortunately believe to be an aggressive dog, but, as we well know, it is always human behavior that influences domesticated animals.

Initially, Ariana believed that her adopted dog, Monty, was not responding to her commands because he was disobedient and not disciplined. In reality, about a week after adopting him, Ariana discovered that the dog had belonged to a family that spoke Spanish. After using the Spanish words for "sit" and "down", Ariana realized that Monty was suddenly listening to her!

The problem, therefore, was not Monty's lack of discipline: the dog only understood commands given in Spanish!

"You could tell he wanted to listen to me, but it was like he didn't know how," Ariana explained. "Once I found out about his background I realized Monty could only recognize commands given in Spanish," Ariana said.

Having understood what the problem was, Monty suddenly became responsive: "We now believe Monty is on his way to becoming bilingual. It's strange: I've been telling my boyfriend for ages that I wanted to learn Spanish and I downloaded an app to learn the language, but I've never used it. Now we have a Spanish-speaking dog, I am really motivated to learn the language," Ariana joked .
