A 19-year-old Brazilian woman, who has asked to remain anonymous, has been the center of attention for having given birth to a very special set of twins. The two little ones were born at the same time and are officially twins, but they have two different fathers. If you think this is not possible, you are wrong and rare occurences like this do, in fact, happen.
It is called a heteropaternal superfecundation - the technical name - and it is a very rare phenomenon that occurs only one in a million. The woman in question is the 20th known case in the world whose children who share the same maternal genetics but were sired by two men.
The young woman, not being sure of the paternity of her babies, she asked for a test to be carried out so as not to risk making a mistake. Once done, the results were very clear: one man was a father - but of only one of the twins. This meant that the second child carried the genetics of another man.
Reflecting on the situation, the 19-year-old stated that during the period of conception, she had dated more than one partner and this had contributed to the rare event. Once a second test was done and it was confirmed the facts, the woman said: "I was amazed by the results. I did not know that such a thing could happen and the children are very similar-looking."
Despite having two fathers, only one of the two has decided to take care of the babies, recognizing both twins as his own.
