One of the most beautiful things that can happen in life is that of the gift of being surprised, experiencing the unpredictability of events, and the awareness that for each of us, nothing in our lives ahead has been already fixed  or predetermined. Of course, surprises and unexpected events - positive or negative ones - can happen in life, but the secret to knowing how to take them with an open mind is to embrace this side of life philosophically and learn to enjoy it.

And this is just what Alison Spooner and Dean Durrant did - an American couple who were blessed with a truly one-of-a-kind biological gift. Apparently, Alison and Dean have very rare genes, given that their four children are composed of two pairs of twins, and this, in itself, would already be considered a rather rare case.

The unpredictability of Mother Nature took her course and gave this couple two pairs of twins at a distance of seven years apart from each other and not only that: each twin is made up of two children with different skin colors. This is a very, very rare case, especially if it happens twice over time and within the same family!

Indeed this is rare, because the point is that Alison is white, while Dean is originally from western India and therefore has a much darker and more intense complexion, for obvious reasons. For this reason, when they found out back in 2001 they were expecting twins they could not believe their eyes when they learned that they had different skin colors. In a nutshell, little Laura had inherited the pale skin, blue eyes and red hair of her mother, while her twin sister Hayleigh had taken a lot of features from her father - including, of course, the color of her complexion.

According to the data provided by the scientific literature in the field of genetics, the possibility that a pair of bi-racial twins (i.e. with different skin colors) being born is very rare, equal to one in five hundred, which is why what happened seven years later to Alison and Dean it is unbelievable. The woman was pregnant again with twins, and these two also had a different complexion color from each other.

Little Leah had inherited Alison's white skin, while Miya was born with much darker features: "I'm almost as amazed as everyone else, there's no easy way to explain this. I'm still in shock even if the first twins had 7 years ago; it's incredible!", said dad Dean.

This is called the power of genetics!
