Most people go at least once a week to do their shopping, as did Mr Neville Linton, 63, of Stourbridge in the West Midlands of the UK. Like always, Neville went to his local Aldi store and did his shopping, which included a bunch of fresh broccoli.

Once back home, he unpacked the broccoli to wash and cook it. And this was when Neville got a nasty surprise. Nested in the broccoli was a small snake, just waiting for someone to release it from the packet.

"I'm not familiar with snakes and I didn't notice anything until I got home and opened the bag. It was scary and it was lucky that I didn't leave the package open in the kitchen. The snake could have got out unnoticed and slipped off to who knows where".

Once he recovered from the shock, and with the help of his sister, Neville took the bag containing the snake and the broccolli back to the shop. In the end, the snake was contained and taken to Dudley Zoo. It was later determined that the snake was of a completely harmless species.

Mr Neville was offered compensation for the inconvenience but he claimed that the offer was not adequate as the snake could have badly frightened his elderly mother or his disabled son.

Have you ever found an "unwelcome guest" in your food packages? And how would you have reacted in Neville's shoes?
