Life is the most precious thing any of us can have. We will try to do everything to preserve it and, as long as we have the time and strength, we should do our utmost to fully enjoy it. It is also true that it is not always possible to do whatever one likes, but one must also carry out certain daily duties, such as going to work and earning our keep. There are some, however, who just can't stay "trapped" in a daily routine and chose to opt out completely.

This is the story of a man who gave up his entire regular life to start a new one in close contact with nature.

Daniel Shellabarger, 48 - also known as Suelo - is a man who, ever since he was young, has always loved nature. One day, he made a dramatic choice and completely changed his life.

Originally from Denver, in the United States, Daniel was an anthropology scholar, a graduate of the University of Colorado, with a good job, a house and a very respectable life. But one day, he suddenly decided that this life was not for him. The burdens of modernity, daily routines and earning money were taking him in a direction that was not good for his physical and mental state.

So, how could he get his life back? He decided to leave everything behind hime and go live in a cave in Moab, Utah.

Daniel had begun to think about doing this in the 90s, but it was only in 2009 that he made his final decision and acted. Initially, he slept wherever he could and ate out of trash cans (which never impacted his health).

Daniel explained: "I had a job in the city, but I chose to live outdoors. I have never accepted money from anyone since I made the change. I decided to completely change my life: I was in Pennsylvania and I entered a telephone booth and left everything I had in the world in there - including my money. I was sure that someone would come the stuff at some point. It was a mystical experience. I felt free and I suddenly knew that wherever I was, I'd be comfortable."

Daniel's 16-year, cave-dwelling adventure was interrupted, however, when he was forced to return to "civilization" to support his elderly parents. They needed him and he would not abandon them.

The experience, however, helped Daniel: he managed to put his life back together and to find the inner peace he needed. Hearing him describe the experience, it is clear that Daniel benefitted from it.

Have you ever wanted to just drop everything and move far away from society?
