Children and adolescents have always been very attracted to video games so much that, if they could, they would spend hours playing without interruption.

The video game issue has always been much debated, especially with regards to the impact video games have on the health of a child or teenager.

Without going into too much detail, we can certainly say that the right balance is always the correct way.

And, of course, spending too many hours in front of a computer screen playing a video game can, in fact, have serious repercussions on a child's life.

The story of this teenage Thai boy, who lost his life precisely because of his excessive video game playing on his computer, will make more than one parent shudder and make us reflect on what is the proper action to take in these cases.

Piyawat Harikun, a 17-year-old Thai boy who lost his life due to a heart attack caused by excessive hours spent playing computer games did not make it.

When he began his summer vacation, after finishing his school year, Piyawat locked himself in his room to play video games, very rarely interrupting this activity to leave his room.

What appeared to be a harmless form of entertainment soon became his condemnation.

His parents, very worried about his health, had repeatedly tried to convince him to take breaks and to decrease the hours spent in front of the computer screen - but it was all in vain.

One morning, the boy's father, Jaranwit Piyawat, entered his son's room after calling him several times without getting an answer.

When he opened the door he found himself facing a sad sight. He saw the lifeless body of his son, slumped on the floor beside the chair in front of his computer.

The doctors did everything possible to revive him, but it was useless. Full of anguish, the father said: "My son was a very intelligent boy and he always had good grades in school, but he had a big problem of addiction to video games. I tried to warn him, to make him stop ... he promised us that he would reduce the hours he played video games, but it was too late."

The teenage boy's parents now regret not having been more severe with their son and not having done enough to prevent his addiction from getting the upper hand.

Video game addiction is a pathological condition known as a "gambling disorder" and is recognized by the World Health Organization.

Although we cannot know for sure if the causes of the boy's death are to be traced back exclusively to the hours spent playing video games on his personal computer or not, but surely his addiction isolated him to such an extent that it also indirectly caused his death.
