The excessive accumulation of liquids in the body is called water retention, a symptomatic condition linked to the reduced or poor functioning of the lymphatic or circulatory system.

In most cases, this disorder is associated with aesthetic problems (physical appearance) but water retention can also affect other aspects of general health.

In fact, among the main causes of water retention are lifestyle and diet! Here are some bad habits to avoid to improve your overall well-being.

  • Insufficient hydration. The right amount of water is essential to prevent the body from storing liquids to fill this potential lack of liquids, thus causing water retention.
  • Vitamin B6 deficiency. In addition to taking specific supplements, it is also possible to increase the intake of this vitamin by consuming foods such as chicken, tuna, sunflower seeds, and pistachios.
  • Magnesium and potassium deficiency. These are two essential minerals for proper organ function, healthy heart, and muscle tone. They can be found in nuts, bananas, walnuts, spinach, etc.
  • High levels of sodium. An excess of this substance (salt) in the body, especially, without drinking enough water, stimulates the body to use its reserves to dilute and balance it. This can generate so-called edema (swelling due to liquid retention).
  • Processed foods. Industrially prepared and refined foods have a high sodium and sugar content which is a bad combination that causes liquids to accumulate in the body.
  • Bathing with water that is too hot. The elevated temperature of the water causes the dilation of the blood and lymphatic vessels. Therefore, it is better to bathe with warm water or take short cold showers.

Another crucial element in the fight against water retention is certainly the combination of a healthy diet with moderate physical activity.

There is no particular sports activity, all types of sports are good, the important thing is to practice them with moderation and constancy. Physical activity is very important to keep the circulatory system active and it also helps us to stay in shape and preserves the proper functioning of our entire body.

In moments of relaxation, you can also reduce the problem of water retention by putting your legs up; in this case, with your knees higher than your pelvis and your ankles higher than your knees.
