A self-respecting teacher must first of all have a passion for her work and for the transmission of knowledge to her students, but establishing a relationship of trust and security with them never hurts. Having built such a relationship, a talented and sensitive teacher named Kerry Bremer could not help but become the legal guardian of Jake Manning, a 14-year-old student with Down syndrome who had lost his mother to breast cancer.

Jake had moved to the CASE Collaborative School in Concord in Massachussetts, and when the teacher learned of the 14-year-old boy's sad family situation, she didn't hesitate to help out as she could; in fact Kerry had told his mother, before she died, that she and her family would gladly welcome little Jake into their home as legal guardians; the brilliant boy would lack for nothing. In May 2020, Kerry and her husband David officially became Jake Manning's legal guardians.

A very courageous decision by this generous teacher's family, as Kerry and David already had three children: Kristen, 21, Jonathan, 19, and Kaitlyn, 16. Unfortunately Jake's mom passed away due to breast cancer in November 2020, but the boy with Down syndrome had already gotten used to sleeping under the Brenners' roof, as he often visited them on weekends, to start getting used to his future life with his new family.

Obviously, for Jake the memory of his mother will always be indelible and he knows perfectly well that his very generous teacher, who had seen him as a very skilled, curious and brilliant student, will never replace her. Yet now Jake has a wonderful family who love him, know what he's worth, and know full well that he has a bright future ahead of him.
