It has often been said and demonstrated that we have much to learn from children.

We could not think otherwise after reading the stories that often see them as the protagonists of meaningful gestures and unexpected behaviors that show a maturity—often more advanced than those that many adults exhibit day after day.

Spontaneity, sincerity, and purity of heart are, for children, the proper attributes that help them relate better to others and the world around them.

And this is something that 12-year-old Andrés knows very well since these are the sentiments that motivated him to try to protect his little puppy.

The young boy from Mexico City was delighted to have a male Pit Bull puppy. Unfortunately, however, cohabitation at home with the little puppy quickly became difficult.

The reason lies in the fact that the boy's father had a bad habit of mistreating the little dog, even going so far as to kick the puppy, thereby, causing serious damage to its tail.

So, in mutual agreement with the boy's mother, the little boy left his little puppy in a box outside a local dog shelter in the city, accompanied by a touching letter and a teddy bear, so that the puppy would not forget him and would also have a playmate.

A gesture of maturity and true altruism because Andrés, despite his affection for the dog, decided to part with it, and he did it exclusively for the little puppy's own good—to keep it from suffering.

Obviously, it must have been a hard decision but when the young boy realized that the situation had become unsustainable, he acted accordingly.

This little boy's story has been shared around the world on the Internet and has touched many people—and on Facebook, the animal shelter managers have posted photos of the little pit bull and the text of Andrés' letter.

Once found and accepted into the shelter, the puppy received the medical care it needed and, after vaccinations and the standard examinations, the puppy was made available for adoption.

The hope is that the gesture of this little puppy's young human friend has saved it from a life of difficulty and suffering and that it will soon find a family willing to give all the love it deserves.

Kudos to this 12-year-old boy with a heart of gold!
