Some would say that the "normal rules" of society would like a woman to finish her studies, get married and start a family, or maybe give up her career if she decides to have children. All of course, at the right times and at the proper ages.

Sometimes, it happens that these plans are turned upside down by circumstances, and a young woman becomes a single mother. Nevertheless, she does not want to resign herself to not getting a good education.

Without a doubt, this can be an uphill struggle that, however, becomes easier when one encounters the right kind of guidance and help.

Tengo una alumna, que no ha desertado a la escuela a pesar de sus distintos roles, por eso accedí a cargar a su hijo, sin interrumpir la clase para que tomara apuntes.

This is demonstrated by what happened to Yalena Salas, a 22-year-old female student who attends the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico.

The young woman is a single mother with a baby boy and is often forced to take him with her during her daily activities because she has no one to help her take care of him.

Fortunately, on her life path, the young woman met Moisés Reyes Sandoval, a Professor of Jurisprudence with a big heart and an open mind who, moved by the tenacity of this student, offered to look after the baby to allow her to attend the course and take notes without any distractions.

The scene was immortalized in a photo taken by some students in the classroom, which soon went viral on social media networks and on the Internet.

The captured image shows the teacher explaining the lesson to his students, while at the same time wearing a baby carrier inside which Yalena's son is clearly visible.

The baby appears to be calm and at ease, as the students alternate between looking and listening to their professor while also stealing glances at the sweet little baby.

Professor Sandoval has also shared this photo on his personal social media page, sending a message to all the women who are in the same situation as Yalena.

Motherhood must not become an impediment, an alibi, or an excuse to set aside one's own projects.

The story of Yelena and Professor Sandoval is an interesting starting point for reflection also in regards to the current educational system. Institutions of higher learning need to make getting an education more human and approachable.

This can be done by providing the support and tools aimed at people in need who truly want to help themselves, by obtaining the knowledge and skills they need to build their own future.
