Swimming is said to be a complete sport, and this is true. Not only because, compared to other physical activities, it involves many more muscles, and is excellent for developing resistance, toning, and the cardiovascular system; but above all, it brings numerous benefits from a psychological perspective.

In fact, water exerts a revitalizing effect on the nervous system; thus, through swimming, one frees oneself from anxiety and stress, by developing and replacing them with positive values, such as perseverance and tenacity.

In general, there are five psychological benefits for those who learn to swim.

  • 1. REDUCES STRESS. The relaxing effect comes from the increased flow of oxygen to the muscles, which forces one to regulate one's breathing. In addition, swimming promotes brain cell renewal in areas threatened by chronic stress.
  • 2. PROVIDES ENERGY. Unlike other sports, swimming invigorates the body, therefore, experts recommend to practice it in the morning, to start the day better.
  • 3. STRENGTHENS SELF-CONFIDENCE. Swimming allows you to really burn excess fat and tone your muscles. In turn, these great physical results lead to increased self-confidence and self-esteem.

  • 4. INCREASES THE POWER OF THE BRAIN. Cardiovascular training oxygenates the brain more effectively, thereby improving its performance, and increasing concentration.
  • 5. FUNCTIONS AS AN ANTIDEPRESSIVE. Although it is an individual sport, swimming lessons are often group-based so this can be a positive socializing experience for the participants. In addition, swimming causes the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, known as the hormone of happiness and good humor.
