Drinking a glass of lukewarm water with lemon juice in the morning, before breakfast, is a habit that many people have,  including many celebrities. Some say that it helps them lose weight and others say it stimulates their metabolism.

Certainly, harm, it cannot do, and indeed this can be a pleasant and refreshing way to drink the first glass of water of the day.

But really, are there no contraindications in regards to drinking a glass of water and lemon? Yes, there are some, and as usual, they manifest when drunk in exaggerated quantities.

Here's what water and lemon can do when drunk too often:

  • Damages your teeth: Since lemon juice is very acidic, in the long run, it can corrode tooth enamel. When this happens, teeth appear yellow and feel rough when the tongue is passed over them.
  • Alters the stomach: If you exaggerate with the amount of lemon juice in water, your stomach may be negatively affected. Doctors warn that lemon juice can worsen the status of existing ulcers and can initiate the so-called gastroesophageal reflux syndrome. The symptoms of which are heartburn, headache, and nausea.
  • Causes dental caries: This is especially true for those who usually sweeten a glass of water and lemon or who drink concentrated juices instead of freshly squeezed lemon juice. In the long run, the sugar content can lead to the development of tooth decay.
  • Worsens mouth ulcers: Drinking water and lemon when mouth ulcers are present results in greatly delaying the healing of the sores. In fact, the acidity of the lemon juice reignites the irritation of the mucous membranes.
  • Lemon peels can be contaminated: If you are not in the habit of choosing organic lemons, then the practice of drinking water and lemon in the morning can lose every possible health benefit. One study found that 70% of non-organic lemons had several types of bacteria that are harmful to humans, including E. coli that cause vomiting and diarrhea. One way to limit the damage is to squeeze out the lemon juice directly into the glass of water and not put a whole lemon in the glass.
  • Triggers migraine headaches: Lemons fall into the category of those foods that in some way can promote the manifestation of migraines. Some studies have shown a connection between headaches and citrus fruits.

As usual, the right way lies somewhere in the middle! You should never exaggerate with the quantities!
