Epsom salt --- all the benefits of this useful mineral compound ... at home and in the garden!

June 13, 2018 • By Shirley Marie Bradby

Probably not everyone is familiar with Epsom salt, even if it is an extraordinarily useful product.

It is a mineral belonging to the epsomite group, or for the enthusiasts of chemistry the official name is magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, and takes its name from the town of Epsom in England, more precisely from its mineral springs where it was found for the first time in the 1600s.

And since then, Epsom salt has never ceased to amaze for its many possible uses, which make it an indispensable product in the house!

Here are some ways in which it can be useful in your own house, too!

1. Easily remove splinters

Make a compress with water and Epsom salt and keep it on the injured area with the splinter. After a few minutes, the skin should be soft enough to remove the splinter.

2. Detoxify your body

Mix the Epsom salt with a little baking soda and aromatherapy essential oils, and use the mixture in the bathtub when you take a bath! An excellent solution to rid your body of toxins.

3. A headache remedy

Thanks to the properties of magnesium, Epsom salt baths help prevent or relieve headaches.

4. Soothing for the skin

Epsom salt has anti-inflammatory properties, which make it excellent for soothing irritated or slightly sunburned red skin. Prepare a spray bottle filled with a cup of water and two tablespoons of Epsom salt to take with you to the beach!

5. Promotes sleep

A saline Epsom bath also has the advantage of improving sleep! In fact, the muscle relaxation induced by magnesium releases the tension accumulated during the day.

6. Adds volume to your hair

Mix some balsam and Epsom salt in equal parts and distribute it on your hair, rubbing the scalp as well. Let the mixture remain on the hair and scalp for 20 minutes before rinsing. Excellent for completely eliminating oil and grease from your hair.

7. Eliminate itching

Just as it is soothing to the skin, Epsom salt is also very useful for relieving itching caused by insect bites, dry skin or contact dermatitis. Mix salt and water in a spray bottle and spray lightly on the affected area.

8.An excellent body scrub

Mix Epsom salt, lemon juice, and olive oil in a jar, and use it as a scrub any time you want to make your skin softer.

9. Relieves muscle pain and cramps

A bath with Epsom salt, in addition to promoting sleep, also fights muscle pain and cramps, due to its high magnesium content.

10. Revitalizes plants

If plant leaves start to curl, the plant is likely to be missing some important nutrients, such as magnesium. In this case, you can remedy the situation by sprinkling some Epsom salt at the base of the plant.

11. Natural fertilizer

Do not wait until the leaves on your plants start to curl --- use Epsom salt as a fertilizer so that your plants stay healthy and luxuriant.

12. Useful for bell peppers

With bell peppers, there is an above average and direct relationship between the size of the plant and the fruit that it produces. Therefore, it is good to supplement them with magnesium every two weeks.

13. A great lawn and lush flowers

Sprinkle your garden with Epsom salt, so you can have bright beautiful flowers and also prevent green grass from turning yellow!
