Stroke (or apoplectic stroke), consists of an abrupt low flow of blood to the brain that causes the death of brain cells.

There are two types of strokes --- the called "ischemic", which is due to a sudden reduction of blood flow, and the "hemorrhagic" caused by bleeding when a weak blood vessel ruptures in the brain.

It is not something as fatal as a heart attack can be, but very often it leaves behind obvious and permanent signs.

Let's learn to recognize the most common symptoms and risk factors.

What are the symptoms of a stroke?

Both in the case of ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke, the following symptoms are present:

  • Sudden state of confusion
  • Difficulty in understanding what is heard and in pronouncing words
  • Facial paralysis limited to one side of the face and often the mouth is distorted and it is not possible to wink the eye
  • Tiredness and numbness in the limbs (hands or feet), arms or legs
  • Intense vertigo, difficulty standing, dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Sudden and unmotivated headache

If you notice that a person is showing one or more than these signs or symptoms, you need to promptly request medical assistance describing the symptoms as accurately as possible.

As you will know, the most common consequences of a stroke are the sudden incapacity to move or perceive a part of the body, problems with language and speech, or the loss of sight in a part of the field of vision. Also, be aware that the main risk factor for stroke is hypertension (high blood pressure). Please keep this information in mind and, if necessary, you can use it to help save someone's life.
