On the way back home, driving her car during a night when temperatures were near zero, a kind and conscientious lady noticed something moving on the side of the road.

To make sure it was nothing serious, the woman stopped, which was fortunate since her intervention proved to be truly providential.

At first sight, she thought it was a dog trembling from fright that had probably been abandoned.

However, when the woman managed to get closer to the dog to take it with her back to the car, she realized the real reason why the animal was outside on such a cold and frosty night.

As a matter of fact, that little dog, curled up on the edge of a snow-covered road, was not alone!

The woman immediately discovered that the animal was trying to protect from the cold what appeared to be a litter of kittens that were only a few days old.

Amazing! That sweet little dog evidently was not thinking of herself but of a litter of kittens and she had drawn on her strong maternal instinct to protect the little ones the best she could.

The woman could not help but welcome all of them into her car and take them to the Pet and Wildlife Rescue animal shelter, saving them from almost certain death from the freezing cold.

But by now, between the little dog and those kittens, a very strong bond had already been created.

For the volunteers at the shelter, the circumstances appeared rather clear: the little female dog had saved the lives of those poor kittens and, now, the animals seemed inseparable.

"If it hadn't been for the presence of this little dog, probably the kittens would have not been able to survive, considering how cold it was last night," commented one of the refuge volunteers.

The kittens are all well now and will be soon vaccinated. And meanwhile, the sweet little stray dog that saved them insists on overseeing their progress by visiting them regularly every day - just like a proud mother.

If no owner shows up to claim them, the kittens and also the dog, her

self will be available for adoption.

This is certainly a story that warms the heart.
