Clean and nice-smelling laundry is the goal that you want to achieve every time you use the washing machine and when it comes to white clothes, then you also want that horrendous yellowed white color to go away.

Unfortunately, the yellowing of light colored fabrics is inevitable and can be accelerated if you do not have the foresight to separate the clothes to be washed or if you do not use specific products.

In regards to these specific products for white clothes, that can be very effective, let's not forget the negative impact they have on the environment and on our health.

Alternative ingredients can be used to make laundry white again, which are less polluting, but no less effective. Here are five ecological cleaning methods that perhaps you do not know about.

1. Vinegar

White vinegar is a very important ingredient when doing the laundry because not only does it have a softening effect (and can, therefore, replace the traditional fabric softener), but it is also able to sanitize the washing machine and remove stains from white clothing.

Add half a cup of white vinegar to the dispenser drawer, in addition to the normal detergent. In case of yellowed white clothes (especially the underarm and collar area) pour the vinegar directly on the clothing and leave for one hour. Later, proceed with the normal washing.

2. Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide does not contain chlorine, so it does not ruin clothes.

You can use it by adding it to the dispenser drawer, together with the normal detergent, or pour it directly on the stains on white items, or mix it with a small amount of baking soda to make a paste to be applied to the most stubborn dirt and stains.

Baking soda is an economical ingredient that softens and remove stains from fabrics.

Add half a cup of baking soda to the washing machine dispenser drawer, in addition to the detergent you normally use.

For the more resistant yellowed stains, combine baking soda with hydrogen peroxide (see the previous point), or baking soda with a few drops of lemon juice, and spread the paste directly on the stains to be removed.

4. Milk

Did you know that milk is especially suitable for removing stains from delicate or cotton clothing?

Using it is very simple. Just soak the garments in some milk, let it act for a few hours, then rinse and wash as usual.

5. Lemons

Lemon juice, in addition to its power to remove stains, also thoroughly sanitizes laundry.

In a large pot, heat some water with slices of lemon and bring to a boil. Let the water cool slightly, then put in the garments to be whitened and leave for at least an hour.

If the yellow stains still will not go away, then prepare the following solution. In a basin of water, add some detergent, a tablespoon of salt, and the juice of two lemons. Immerse the garments, wash, rinse, and let them dry in the sun.

  • Bleaching chemicals should not be used with polyester clothing, as the material may react with the chlorine in the products and cause the yellowing of the garment.
  • It is preferable to avoid contact with any product (deodorants, perfumes, lotions, etc ...) with white fabrics, as they could lead to the formation of yellow stains.
