Since the Coronavirus outbreak began, public health departments across the globe have been repeatedly expressing the importance of practicing good hygiene. They've been putting particular emphasis on handwashing. This practice, however, is only effective if we are also cleaning the items that we use/touch frequently. These items are above all else our cell phones.

Even before the outbreak, many health experts revealed how smartphones and similar devices are a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. We take our phones with us everywhere, including to the bathroom. This is why it's important more than ever to keep our phones clean as it could keep us from contracting the virus.

Several smartphone manufacturers have already begun to offer suggestions on how to keep your phone clean. If you'd like to learn more about how to best disinfect your particular phone brand (apple, samsung, etc.), you can visit the manufacturer's website. We've found that the rules really don't change much from one brand to another. That's why we've laid out the general rules to follow in this article.

First and foremost, make sure you unplug and turn off your phone before cleaning it. If your phone has a cover, remove it and wash it separately. For the cover, you can simply use water and soap to disinfect it.

To clean your phone, it's important not to use any products that contain bleach (otherwise, it will ruin it). The best product you can use is ethanol wipes. Pass the wipe lightly across your phone screen, avoiding openings as much as possible so the solution does not seep into the cracks. Never place your phone in water and never spray anything directly on its surface.

If you don't have ethanol wipes, you can create your own. Simply mix equal amounts of water and rubbing alcohol together and use a smooth cloth to spread the solution across the phone's surface. Avoid using toilet paper or cloths with abrasive surfaces.

If you're looking to protect yourself, and your loved ones, from contracting the virus, follow these steps daily. As we've seen, it doesn't take much to pass the virus from one person to another. That's why we need to be doing everything we can to stop the virus in its tracks and cleaning your phone is just one of the many ways you can help.
