Fortunately, today being left-handed aka lefty is no longer a problem.

In fact, gone are the days in which the left hand was considered to be the "hand of the Devil", and when society tended to correct, from a very early age, children who preferred to use their left hand to write.

Although today most of the devices for everyday use are still designed for right-handed people, now no one ever discourages this natural ability - especially after several studies have highlighted the numerous positive characteristics of left-handed people aka "lefties" who constitute 10% of the world's population.

Here are some reasons why left-handed people are special, according to science.

  • 1. Lefties have strong artistic skills. According to confirmatory research published by the American Journal of Psychology, the typical brain development of left-handed people leads them to find alternative solutions, that are original and more "creative" to solve problems. Among the great artists in history, who were lefties are Michelangelo Buonarroti, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, Paul Klee, Peter Paul Rubens, Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, and Charlie Chaplin.
  • 2. Lefties are more productive – and earn more. In 2006, a group of researchers at Johns Hopkins University and Lafayette University discovered that, at higher levels of education, the left-handed earn between 10 and 15% more than their right-handed colleagues.

  • 3. Lefties have a high IQ. Among the members of Mensa International - an association that selects and brings people together based on their IQ - at least 20% use their left hand. Among the famous geniuses in history who were lefties, we commemorate Albert Einstein and Marie Curie.
  • 4. Lefties are fierce competitors. In 2005, a French study investigated the relationship between use of the left hand and aggression, concluding that among the most aggressive populations there is a 27% presence of left-handedness, a percentage that falls to 3% among the most peaceful peoples. Perhaps this characteristic of being left-handed makes them more determined in pursuing their goals.

  • 7. Lefties have a "winning" image. Among the last five presidents of the United States of America, three were left-handed: Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. Among those of the past, we include Gerald Ford, James Garfield, and Harry Truman. According to some communication specialists, one of the reasons is the different impact that their "mirror" image would give to the public.
  • 8. Lefties can have an advantage in sports. Since left-handed people are still a minority, in general athletes train to face right-handed opponents, which makes them more unprepared for the left-handed. Among the sports in which this disparity is most evident, are tennis, boxing, and badminton.

In short, if you are left-handed perhaps you will not become the next president of the United States of America, but you certainly have some advantages that can make you smile! :)
